How To Steal Drake’s Fashion Sense

by Jamie Wilson

In between being a world renowned rapper who’s playing to tens of thousands of fans across the globe every night, Drake has also got an incredible sense of fashion. Here’s our easy tips for stealing his style.

Fresh off the back of releasing More Life, the Canadian native’s style is one that has seen some major improvements and drastic changes over the last few years, giving him the style edge on his peers.

With rappers having the ability to influence everything when it comes to clothing, it’s no surprise that he has managed to carve out a style that sees him in everything from boiler suits to dinner suits. Although he’s often spotted in high end brands like Stone Island and Moncler, the three time Grammy award winner likes to dress it down with pieces from Champion, Supreme and Palace – showing that he is still a man of the people.

This guide is to designed to help you own Drake’s fashion style without having to worry about the hefty price tag that might come with it, so take a look below to see how you can dress like Drake.

Hoodies

Like most rappers, Drake is often spotted in a hoodie or jumper. It’s no surprise as flying across the globe is pretty tiring work, so he needs to be comfortable in between shows. Oversized or baggy hoodies seem to be his go-to when it comes to picking one, and more often than not these are dark, tonal colours.

Being stylish and comfortable is something that rappers really seem to pull off well, so make sure you get the balance right when choosing the right hoodie.

Jackets

One thing that sets him apart from the rest and gives him his bold style is Drake’s jacket choices. These will often vary between coach jackets and peacoats, to bombers and varsity jackets when he’s feeling slightly more casual. So picking the right jacket for the occasion is the key to implementing Drake’s clothing style and turning it into your own. You don’t need to break the bank in order to recreate some of these iconic styles, but one thing to remember is if you’re reading this, it’s time to up your jacket game.

T-Shirts

Wearing a classic fit or slightly baggy T-shirt is crucial if you’re aiming to create the Six God’s style. Drake’s not afraid to go for the bold, bright colours when choosing a T-shirt, so it’s a good idea to start thinking about what colours suit you the best. It’s good to get a variety of colours into your wardrobe as colour can show confidence and who wouldn’t want a bit of that?

Drake’s outfits are still kept simple, so when it comes to T-shirts it has to be minimal. Bold prints are not what he goes for if it’s just a T-shirt, jeans and trainers combination, so try not to get too carried away. Less is more when it comes to Drake’s fashion.

Jeans

Probably one of the most defining things about Drake’s style is his choice in jeans. The most important thing to remember about Drake, and almost all rappers, is that they do NOT wear skinny jeans. Slim jeans are the only style to go for and are a long time favourite in hip-hop culture – so if you’re a lover of the skinnies maybe its time to mix it up a little.

Relaxed fit or slim fit jeans are usually the way to go, so make sure that your jeans are loose fitting round the thighs and slightly baggy at the bottom. They should sit just above your shoes but not be in the style of a bootcut and turning them up at the bottom is also a no-go. When it comes to colour, Drake will usually go for a darker shade when on stage and a light blue for his everyday wear. He’s one of the very few stars that can actually pull light blue jeans off – he does this really well when paired with light pinks, white T-shirts and hoodies.

Tracksuits

The easiest and most effortless way to recreate Drake’s style is by wearing a well put together tracksuit. Even when the rapper goes completely casual, he’s still able to pull of a look that doesn’t completely shout lazy. Cosy can be stylish and that’s very important to remember when it comes to recreating some of Drake’s looks.

A simple two piece tracksuit can go along way and, if styled correctly, can be an extremely effective outfit. If you’ve seen Drake live then you will already know that tracksuits play a vital role in his on stage costumes, showing the Toronto-born rapper’s street roots and commitment to this athletic style. As always its best to keep the tracksuit simple, do this by matching the colours and not going too baggy. This is one of the few times that he actually goes for something with a slimmer fit.

As Drake is sponsored by Jordan Brand, a lot of what he wears on stage is influenced by the sneakers he’s got on. As Octobers Very Own has got bigger and bigger, this has meant that Drake apparel has become an exclusive item to own and often means spending a lot of money in order to recreate his style.

However, Drake doesn’t wear Jordans all the time and sticks to some of his favourite items like Timberlands to help mix up his style a little. The versatility and ruggedness of the Timberland has often meant that it has stood the test of time and can be coupled with almost any outfit or style.

If it’s not Timberlands or Jordans then it’s clean cut trainers and usually minimal colours. White and black are the go to colours, so make sure you stick to this rule of thumb.

Accessories

No rapper’s outfit would be complete without some accessories to show the whole thing off – and Drake is no different. Even though Drake’s not overly complicated in the things he chooses to wear, he still dons some essential accessories. Don’t try and keep up with the OVO frontman on bling unless you can afford to spend $100k on a Stone Island pendant or $277k on an Audemars Piaget watch – so for now just focus on something that is reliable and aesthetically pleasing.

Gold and silver are obviously the only colours that you can wear if you’re planning on accessorising like Drake properly, and the accessories you put on can really make or break your your outfit. Take a bit of time when it comes to accessorising and keep it minimal.

How to Dress like Drake

  • Drake keeps it simple and so should you. Don’t over do it with logo’s or prints when it comes to choosing any T-shirts or hoodies.
  • Colour is something Drake does well, and pinks seem to be an all time favourite, so you can keep it bright and stay looking fresh.
  • When it comes to jeans keep them slim – no skinny jeans or wide legged jeans. A light blue for the day and darker colour for the evening will do the trick.
  • Accessories are minimal. Watches, hats and bags are the three go-to Drake pieces so keep it simple.

On That Note

The important lesson of less is more and simplicity is what you should take from Drake’s style. A T-shirt, jean and trainer combo should be the starting point and soon you’ll be able to mix and match with styles and colours to match some of Drake’s best outfits. You don’t need to spend a fortune but knowing what to wear and how to style it is what is going to make sure you really own Drake’s look.
