We all want to make a great impression, particularly a first impression, regardless of what we’re wearing. And undoubtedly, you’ll mostly be wearing a tee. Here’s a basic guide to plain and coloured tees, and how to create a great impression with them.
So, you have that big date coming up, but it isn’t going to be a night time affair. When you swiped right on Tinder 3 weeks ago, and the object of your lust fell for your charms, you promised her a romantic picnic in the local park.
It’s the day before, and you’ve ticked everything off your ‘to do’ list apart from choosing what to wear. You head to your wardrobe and ponder over your tops, t-shirts, and vests – what the hell do I choose?! Don’t worry, big guy, we’ve got you. Our basic guide to plain and coloured t-shirts will help you out with those last-minute pre-date panics.
Unless you’re trying to peacock your date, we’d advise against turning up looking like a highlighter pen. This means that you need to bear in mind the colours that you’re wearing.
If you decide to go for a neutral coloured plain t-shirt, such as a grey or a navy crew neck number, you can pretty much get away with wearing any trousers. Be conservative when you’re choosing your bottom option, though. Unless you’re Ace Ventura, of course, and then anything goes.
Fashion in the 21st Century is very much about pushing the boundaries, which is why a lot of t-shirts feature patterns, and a number of colour combinations. Brands such as The Hundreds are passionate about contemporary streetwear and you can often find t-shirts that feature a picture on. If it’s a bit chilly outside and you want to cover your arms, you also have the option of long sleeved tees, which will go perfectly with a nice pair of blue jeans.
If you choose a t-shirt that has a pattern emblazoned across or features a particular print, it’s important that you ensure your bottom half compliments your top. For example, a t-shirt that features reddish tones would be best paired with a dark blue jean or skinny black trousers. You want to stand out from the crowd for all of the right reasons, and these don’t include looking like a canary!
Although the t-shirt may appear to be a very simple item that should live at the bottom of your drawers, t-shirts are very versatile items. This is why it’s important to get the right cut for your body type:
- V neck – this features a ‘v’ cut down the chest, and is often worn by men who have gym bods.
- Scoop neck – this is a more modest version of the v neck, however the cut is round and runs from shoulder to shoulder.
- Crew neck – running from shoulder to shoulder, this sits very close to the collarbone.
- Grandad – this gives you a little bit of choice, as it features a button up neck that can be undone if you fancy a more chilled out vibe.
Not all cuts suit all body types, so it’s imperative that you educate yourself about which cut is best for you. In addition to searching for advice and information online, you can even experiment in the changing rooms of your high street retailers to be sure. There’s no need to be shy; even the most fashionable men had to start somewhere.
Don’t be afraid to accessories and bling your outfit up a little! Although you don’t want to look like a rapper that sports a multitude of gold chains (or maybe you do – each to their own and all), you could add a little something to your look. Whether this takes the form of a smart-looking watch or a Vitality Stainless Steel Silver Ring pendant, don’t be afraid to experiment with your style.
Additionally, you may want to add a jacket to make your t-shirt stand out a little more. Always choose a jacket that compliments the cut, style, and colour of your chosen t-shirt for the maximum effect. Jackets are perfect for all weather types, so you can always rely on layering up in order to bring an added element to your style.
In the colder months, you may want to opt for a bomber-style jacket that will keep you warm while ensuring that you look the part. When the sun is shining and you’re venturing out for the evening, a denim jacket can complete any smart-casual look.
The t-shirt is one of the most versatile items you can have in your wardrobe, and due to the wide variety of fabrics, cuts, fits and colours, you’ll have a collection that will take you through the whole year and any occasion. And styled correctly, you’ll always be smashing first impressions.
